Steve Asiala, the assistant director for research engagement at the IDEA Center, has successfully spearheaded the implementation of entrepreneurship classes for Ph.D. students in the College of Engineering, College of Science, and the Graduate School.
Starting in Fall 2023, the COE, COS, and the Graduate School, in collaboration with the IDEA Center, will offer two graduate-level, 1-credit courses. These courses will introduce post-qualifying exam students pursuing their Ph.D. in the Colleges of Science and Engineering to the principles of generating impact from research innovations, entrepreneurship, and deep-tech commercialization.
In these courses, students can explore areas of inquiry and interest that are currently not covered in their academic programs.
They will be able to:
1) Gain a fresh perspective on their research projects
2) Actively engage in hands-on learning experiences,
3) Expedite the impact of their research innovations
4) Nurture their entrepreneurial mindset.
Both courses will be offered on a credit/no credit basis, with weekly class meetings scheduled at the IDEA Center during typical business hours. The timing of the classes will be arranged to accommodate all participants' schedules. Selected participants are expected to enroll in and successfully complete both courses as part of the program.
A pilot cohort consisting of 10 students, with five from the College of Engineering and five from the College of Science, will be chosen to participate in these courses. The selected participants will be honored with the prestigious Edison Innovation Fellowship and will receive a stipend of $15,750 for the Spring Semester of 2024.

Note: The selection of participants from the pool of applicants will be conducted by representatives from the Colleges, Graduate School, and IDEA Center.
