INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE:

Dick Cox joined Notre Dame in 2008 as the Director of the former Office of Technology Transfer. With the creation of the ND IDEA Center, in his current role as Director, Technology Commercialization, Dick continues to have overall responsibility for helping faculty convert promising new technologies into useful products and services.  Working with Notre Dame’s faculty as they identify solutions and develop technologies to address some of society’s most challenging problems, Dick and the Tech Commercialization team help accelerate and amplify these solutions by finding industrial partners who have the resources and expertise to bring new technologies to market.  With the IDEA Center’s focus on tech-based start up creation, the Tech Commercialization team is at the center of the de-risking and business development for promising technologies, working in close partnership with the New Ventures & Investments and Start ups units of the IDEA Center.

Prior to joining Notre Dame, Dick was the previous Director of the Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development at the University of Hawai’i and held similar leadership positions at the University of South Carolina, the National Technology Transfer Center, and the former University of Tennessee Research Corporation.  Over his 27-year career in university tech commercialization, Dick has helped commercialize several hundred technologies in a dozen or more commercial sectors, in areas as diverse as forestry, tropical agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics, to manufacturing, education, and environmental remediation. He is a long time member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), the technology commercialization professional organization, where he has served on operational and organizing committees, recently headed an effort to develop a professional exchange program, and is a frequent speaker.  In addition, Dick is currently on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Research University Network (MRUN).
