Joseph Diorio, Esq.

Intellectual Property Manager


Joe is currently the Intellectual Property Manager for the University of Notre Dame, IDEA Center.


Prior to his current role at the IDEA Center, Joe has worked as a patent attorney at Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox, where he focused his work on patent prosecution. Joe has experience handling the prosecution of patent applications ranging from medical devices to consumer products and logistical algorithms.

Joe has also worked as the Interim Director of Technology Commercialization for Rowan University, where he managed the University’s IP, secured license agreements, and created startup companies based around the University’s IP.

While pursuing his graduate degree at the University of Notre Dame, Joe co-founded KoffieStraw, LLC, a reusable silicone straw for hot beverages. Joe designed and patented the straw, which has been featured in BuzzFeed, Women’s Health, Money Magazine, and the Today Show.

Having experience working in a law firm, university technology transfer office, and as an inventor, Joe has a unique perspective to intellectual property and is excited to use his experiences to help students and faculty secure intellectual property.


Joe has a JD from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law, an MS in Patent Law from the University of Notre Dame, and a BS in Civil Engineering from Rowan University.


Joe is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and he is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia.
